BNFL Consumer Energy Condensing Tank Decommissioning Project

Consumers Energy contracted Construction Solutions to provide on site support and training to contractor personnel for special metal wire sawing after spending over a week attempting to cut one of several condenser tanks. This project required wire sawing the ends off of steel condenser tanks to allow access for removal of surface contamination to reduce radiation levels in the area. All cutting was conducted in a location above the tank room via remote operation. Prior to Construction Solutions coming on site, the contractor was experiencing repeated wire breakage. The on site evaluation revealed the cause of the wire breakage to be the location and placement of guide pulleys, low wire speed, inefficient coolant application, and improper wire tension control. After training of the contractor operations personnel, and modification of the guide pulley positions, wire breakage was reduced to an acceptable amount for this application and the project was completed within 48 hours.
