CDOT Case Study - Void Detection
Colorado Department of Transportation Red Cliff Bridge deck replacement project called for the use of high silica concrete to reduce the effects of chloride corrosion from road salts. Constructing with this new mix design produced several challenges for proper consolidation especially after a design change reduced the spacing between the top and bottom rebar mats by 1 ½ inches. Voids were detected on the bottom of the deck upon removing forms.
Construction Solutions was contacted to determine the extent of voids present in the bridge deck and to map void locations for engineering analysis and remediation planning.
Construction Solutions performed a 3D Ground Penetrating Radar analysis of one lane of the bridge structure generating a 3D image of the voids and rebar mats. We located the voids in Cartesian coordinates referenced to a grid pattern laid out on the bridge deck surface. |
